CHAPTER 4

Defending Against a Werewolf

Werewolf-Proofing Your Home, Car and Business

The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does forget the possibility of ruin. When all is orderly, he does not forget that disorder may come. Thus his person is not endangered, and his States and all their clans are preserved.

–CONFUCIUS

The old saying about closing the barn door after the horse is out also applies to werewolves. You cannot just operate on the defensive and pick up the pieces after the attack. Put up safeguards. Werewolf-proof your home and yourself to discourage the attack ahead of time.

First determine whether you are dealing with a physical werewolf who is under a curse and can’t escape his animalistic ways, or a magical werewolf, shamanistic in his creation, self-initiated and out to wreck havoc. If the latter, you’ll need magical protection. For now, let’s assume you are dealing with a straightforward physical werewolf who can’t control his mad, raging binges.

When planning your defensive perimeters, you’ll first want a general area fortification and identification zone; this is your first line of defense against a werewolf. Then protect your immediate surroundings and home fortress, including your house, car and business. The last defense zone, if the werewolf breeches the first two layers, is your personal space and your body.

How aware of your surroundings are you? Do you think you notice things fairly well? What color is the awning on the house next door? If you just finished speaking with the boss, what color was his tie? If you just came out of the supermarket, can you tell me which aisle number was the cat food in? We become so used to certain parts of our everyday lives that we forget to pay attention. Our minds are so focused on work or home life or the phone call we’re making that we don’t really see our surroundings. That is how an attack can happen right in your own backyard. It may be true that most “accidents” happen within 20 miles of home, but remember, that is where we spend 90 percent of our time.
